Common questions

What questions should I ask in a reference check?

Ask how they worked together, what the candidate owned and delivered, where they did their best work, where they could grow, and whether the reference would work with them again. Add two questions on anything that came up in interviews. Ask every reference the same job-related questions.

Do I need the candidate’s permission to call references?

Get it. Ask the candidate for their references and their okay before you call, and don’t contact a current employer without it. Rules vary by location, so follow your own policy and local law.

How many references should I check?

Two or three is common, ideally including someone who managed them. Look for patterns across the calls rather than relying on any one.
